Rapid, continuous product analysis is critical for all paper, film and converting processes. The Guardian Web Profiling System is designed for reliable determination of coat weight, moisture and film thickness for quick return on investment in diverse converting applications.

The Guardian supports process optimization by accurately measuring moisture and coating thickness, providing a complete zoned web profile. Reduce start-up times and waste by visually identifying production inefficiencies using the PSC proprietary software.

Guardian systems are accurate, fast, reliable & low maintenance. They provide a non-contact, non-destructive on-line measurement and are unaffected by relative humidity, changes in product temperature, ambient light and temperature. Full-Featured PC Web Profiling Package

The Guardian Profile System connects to a PC with a 19” Display at a Central Console. Larger displays, up to 65”, for multiple scanners and measurements, can be integrated into a single distributed system. The Guardian System can also be operated manually or via a Human Machine Interface (HMI).

Entry Level 12” Display Profiling Package

Process Sensors Guardian Cross Direction Web Profile System can be as simple and inexpensive as an automatic scanning frame with 12” Operator Interface (OI) for profile display and controls mounted on frame end.

Simple 5.7” Display Scanning Package

This system allows for automatic scanning across web or jogging to fixed position for machine direction measurement and display on a 5.7” touch screen with alarms, alerts and analog and digital outputs.

Near Infrared Measurements – How Do They Work?

Near Infrared (NIR) measurements are based on specific absorption bands in the electromagnetic spectrum between 800 and 2500 nanometers (nm).  This region is just above the visible light region of 400 - 700 nm.  Electromagnetic waves in the region have the best combination of energy, sensitivity and absorbtion to be useful for quantitative measurments of solid materials. 

While full spectrum analyzers may utilize the entire spectrum and multivariate mathematical treatments such as Principal Component Regression (PCR), Partial Least Squares (PLS) or neural networks, photometers use “slices” of the spectrum that correspond to specific molecular overtones and associated vibrational absorptions.

NIR Region of Electromagnetic Spectrum

Photometers utilize narrow band pass interference filters that have a specified band width typically 50 nm wide, though the band width is sometimes application dependent.  The NIR has broad bands as opposed to the sharp peaks in the Infrared region.  Common bonds are O-H (1940 and 1420 nm) in water, C-H (2340 nm) in organics and oils and N-H in proteins.  The NIR sensors are extremely sensitive instruments that are optimized to measure the absorbancies of samples at these specific wavelength regions.  The quantity of the constituent to be measured us proportional to the absorbance level at these specific wavelengths.
